Host Families Needed for European Students!
August 22nd – September 6th, 2009
Who: Eighteen students (ages 15-17) from Slovakia, Hungary or the Czech Republic who are in the United States for a four-week program in civic engagement, diversity and leadership, funded by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State. The students are all of Romani (Gypsy) heritage.
What: A vital part of their visit is a two week stay with a US teen and his or her family. Host Families provide a home for one student who is the same gender as their teenager. The European students all speak English and are appreciative and responsible guests. They will enjoy doing whatever the host family has planned, we only ask that you provide an appropriate place to sleep, meals to eat and your time to spend with them. They will attend any school that your student participates in on 2-3 of the days they are here, as well as after school activities if possible. The students will participate in workshops or short trips on the other days during the Host Family stay – we will provide transportation as needed. There are opportunities for the Host Family teen to participate in these workshops and trips as well!
We will spend time with all Host Families to orient them to the program, answer questions about caring for their guest, and help them learn about the Romani culture of Central Europe. The Host Family stay is an incredible way to learn more about the people, cultures, beliefs and traditions of other parts of the world!
